Engage Befriending is a home visiting/befriending initiative aimed at isolated older people living in the Reading Borough. Our volunteers usually visit one person each, who will have been identified by a health or social care worker or charitable organisation as requiring befriending services in their own home. This could be due to ill health, disability, or other reasons leading to isolation or loneliness. We are not able to provide visits for those in

advanced stages of dementia or with other complex needs.

Our volunteers make visits on either a weekly or fortnightly basis for around one hour. We can take clients out as part of this visit if appropriate. This provides an opportunity for social interaction and often develops into the highlight of the week for many older people. We do not provide counselling or physical care although if there are minor tasks that could be helpful, we will offer to assist with these if appropriate.

All volunteer visitors receive a DBS check, are required to provide two references and attend induction training (including ‘Safeguarding’). We also offer on-going training and support in their roles.
